ABOUT
Trespass investigates the changing stages of perception between what can be seen as the ‘real’ and ‘unreal’ within the urban/suburban context. The project arises from the supposition that there is a dichotomy between the everyday world as lived by the urban majority, and their experience and perception of the supposedly natural landscape and environment. The investigation uses collage to represent and compare the constructed realness of urban everyday life, referred to in this research as the ‘inside’, with the apparently unconstructed natural environment, or landscape, termed the ‘outside’. The artwork in the Trespass series explores the aesthetic tension between natural landscapes of South East Queensland and the built environment of suburbs, and reflects an autobiographical positioning and cultural identity which informs the practice-led research. By using the lens of self-perception to question which environment is most real – the suburban ‘inside’ environment or a natural ‘outside’ landscape – the artworks also offer the contradistinctive view experienced by visitors and travellers, and proposes that their viewing context, being largely informed by picture-perfect ‘fictional’ ideals of the Australian lifestyle, differs from the autobiographical view.
